■ The Broward County, Fla.,
Council celebrated the 40th anniversary of its chartering with a special dinner at the Tropical Acres
Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale in
late March that included a proclamation commemorating the event
and recognition of the some of
council’s major accomplishments
over the years, according Robert
N. Hein, the council’s public relations officer. The council received
its charter on March 22, 1968, and
has provided support and service
to the community and the seagoing
services ever since.
Guest speaker at the event was
Coast Guard Cmdr. John Daly,
commanding officer of Tactical Law
Enforcement Team (TACLET)
South. He detailed TACLET South’s
anti-smuggling and maritime security efforts, which include boarding
suspicious ships looking for drugs,
terrorists and human cargo.
■ Adm. Gary Roughead, chief of
naval operations, made the rounds
at Navy League Council affairs in
April and May. He was the guest
speaker at the Treasure Coast, Fla.,
Council’s dinner meeting April 2.
The dinner meeting was held at the
Best Western Hotel in Vero Beach.
On May 17, Roughead was the
guest of honor at the Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Council’s
Armed Forces Day Gala “Honoring
America’s Heroes.” Prior to the
gala, which was held at the
Admiral Theater, Roughead was
the Grand Marshall for Bremerton’s
Armed Forces Day Parade. While
serving as commander, U.S. Pacific
Fleet, Roughead visited Bremerton
several times to see the community
and its Navy bases and ships. ■

STATEMENT OF POLICY
■ We of the Navy League of the United
States stand for a strong America — a nation
morally, economically, and internally strong.
■ We believe that the security of our nation
and of the people of the world demands a
well-balanced, integrated, mobile American
defense team, of which a strong Navy, Marine
Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine are
indispensable parts.
■ We support all Armed Services to the end
that each may make its appropriate contribu-
tion to the national security.
■ We know that in a free nation an informed
public is indispensable to national security
and, therefore, we will strive to keep the
nation alert to dangers which threaten — both
from without and within.
■ We favor appropriations for each of the
Armed Services, adequate for national securi-
ty, economically administered.
■ We oppose any usurpation of the
Congress’s constitutional authority over the
Armed Services.
■ We urge that our country maintain world lead-
ership in scientific research and development.
■ We support industrial preparedness, plan-
ning, production.
■ We support efforts of our government to
achieve worldwide peace through international
cooperation.
■ We advocate a foreign policy which will
avoid wars — if possible; if not, win them!
