the year and named Hannon and Sophonisbe. They likely
will be commissioned by the end of 2019.
The new class of OPVs is expected to replace some,
if not all, of Tunisia’s Type 143B-class fast-attack craft
that were received from Germany in 2005 and 2006
and built in the mid-1970s.
France Orders Fourth OPV
The French Directorate General of Armaments has
signed a contract with Kership (a joint venture of Piriou
and DCNS) for the fourth unit of the OPV under the
French Navy’s Baitment Multi-Mission (B2M) program.
The B2M OPVs are 65 meters (213.25 feet) in length
and displace 2,300 tons full load. They have a top speed of
15 knots, and are armed with two 12.7mm machine guns.
The new OPVs can deploy one 8-meter ( 26.25-foot)
utility boat and two rigid-hull inflatable boats, and
have a 12-ton crane for loading and unloading twenty-foot equivalent unit containers and other cargo. They
also have the capability to employ one, 1-ton vertical-takeoff-and-landing unmanned aerial vehicle. Additionally, a 9-meter ( 29.5-foot) unmanned surface
vessel can be carried in lieu of the utility boat.
The fourth unit, to be named Durmont d’Urville (A624),
will be commissioned in late 2018 and deployed to the
Airbus Sells Stake in Atlas Elektronik
Airbus has reached an agreement to sell its stake
in Atlas Elektronik to their joint venture partner
ThyssenKrupp. After nearly two years of planning by
Airbus to divest itself of its naval and marine systems
group, ThyssenKrupp has agreed to acquire Airbus’ 49
percent stake in the company.
Both Airbus and ThyssenKrupp originally procured
Atlas Elektronik in a joint venture in 2006 from BAE
Systems. Atlas Elektronik will continue to be headquartered in Germany, with subsidiaries in Australia, Canada,
Denmark, Finland, India, South Korea and the United
Kingdom, and build a range of naval warfare systems,
command, control and communication systems, and
unmanned underwater and surface systems. n
