rine Systems received the initial
$2.9 billion payment from Turkey
to provide six submarine material
packages as part of a $3.96 billion
deal that was signed in 2008.
ThyssenKrupp’s Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) will provide
the materials from 2012 through
2015 in order for Turkey’s Golcuk
Naval Shipyard to build/assemble all
six units. The first unit is scheduled
to commission in 2015 with the
sixth unit by 2020.
The submarines will replace the
six units of the Atilay class on a
one-for-one basis. This order will
assist HDW in securing its employment in Kiel as well as many subcontractors throughout Germany.
Turkey also will benefit by securing
employment at Golcuk as well as
gaining further experience in submarine construction.
Most of electronic subsystems
and integration work will be con-
ducted by Turkish subcontractors
such as Havelsan, Aselsan and Koc
Information and Defense Tech-
nologies.
Netherlands Conducts
Navy Strategic Review
The Royal Netherlands Navy is conducting a new strategic review as a
result of the 15 percent defense
budget reduction over the next four
years that was announced in April.
About $1.4 billion will be cut
from defense spending by 2014.
The Dutch defense budget total is
expected to drop to about $10.9
billion for 2015. The 2010 total was
about $11.3 billion.
The strategic review will lay out
the requirements envisioned by the
sea service over at least the next
decade and corresponding capabil-
ities programs that will be needed
to fulfill those requirements.
