Giambrone received the award
from Mary Anne Gray, Broward
Navy Days’ president and chairwoman, and Garry Murphy, Broward
Navy Days’ Navy liaison.
The Freedom Awards are given
annually by Broward Navy Days,
which assists with the morale, welfare and recreational needs of the
nation’s sea-going services as well as
enlisting public support for its mission throughout the year. Broward
Navy Days coordinates the annual
Fleet Week Port Everglades and
partners with the local Navy League
councils on this and other events
that support sea service personnel.
Recipients are selected in several categories including business,
military and volunteer. Giambrone, a member of the Broward
County Council, was selected for
the numerous hours he volunteers
in support of the military and
Merchant Mariners.
He has been involved with Fleet
Week for eight years. He is responsible for the Command Center at
Port Everglades, which includes
soliciting volunteers to check-in
the civilians taking tours of the
military ships, handling VIP and
dignitaries’ visits, and serving as a
liaison to Navy personnel. In 2010,
more than 9,000 people participated in the Fleet Week tours, including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and
Junior ROTC cadets.
Giambrone has served as South
Florida Area president for the past
two years and is a member of the
Broward County Council board of
directors. He also is a member of
the Pacific Merchant Marine
Council, based in San Francisco,
and volunteers at Seafarers’ House,
a nonprofit mission that provides
support to Merchant Mariners at
Port Everglades.
