Canada Restarts Joint Support Ship
By AMI INTERNATIONAL INC.
The Canadian Ministry of National Defense is again
moving forward with the acquisition of the Joint Support Ship (JSS)
for the Canadian Navy. The new
ships will be built in Canada, as
announced in the early June release
of the new National Shipbuilding
Procurement Strategy.
The JSS program, which had
been canceled in 2008 because of
budgetary concerns, will include
two units with an option for a
third. The total program costs are
projected at $2.5 billion.
The JSS will supply fuel, ammunition, spare parts, food and water, as
well as provide a home base for the
maintenance and operation of helicopters, a limited sealift capability
and logistics support to forces
deployed ashore.
The definition phase of the pro-
gram already has begun and
involves the assessment of both new
and existing designs. ThyssenKrupp
Marine Systems Canada and SNC-
Lavalin ProFac Inc. of Montreal had
been initially selected and were set
to receive contracts for the project
definition phase when the program
was canceled.
Norwegian Logistic
Ship Detailed Design
Will Begin in 2011
The detailed design of Norway’s
Future Logistic Support Ship (LSS)
will begin in 2011. Based on that
timeline, construction will be de-
layed until at least 2013, pushing the
in-service date to 2015 or 2016. Nor-
wegian Minister of Defense Anne-
Greta Strom-Erichsen had an-
nounced that the Royal Norwegian
Navy intended to acquire a new LSS
valued at $243.4 million, with an in-
service date of 2014.

Italy To Buy LHDs,
Cancel Last Four
FREMM Units
The Italian Navy has received
approval to procure two 20,000-
ton amphibious assault ships
(LHDs). The agreement includes
an option for a third unit that will
be configured with extensive aviation facilities. The initial funding
of $67 million for the project definition phase has been approved
and will run through early 2011.
Assuming that the funding line
continues on schedule, a construction contract could be in place by
early 2012 with the Italian Navy
taking delivery of the first unit in
late 2014 or early 2015.
