■ The St. Maarten, Thailand and
Puerto Vallarta Councils have
arranged a number of community
projects in recent years through the
sea service community relations
programs to work with visiting
Sailors, Marines and Coast Guard
men and women assisting their
communities’ poor and homeless as
well as local schools.
For more than a decade, Puerto
Vallarta also has raised funds
through golf outings and dinner
dances for the local Toys for Tots
effort that now benefits more than
10,000 local children. This effort is
supported by the Stockton, Calif.,
Council through a partnership
between the councils.
According to the workshop
guide, one of the more ambitious
and successful council community
service efforts has been Navy Days
LA, which began in 2004 and is
organized, promoted and conduct-
ed by Los Angeles-area Navy
Leaguers. It has become a popular
cultural and public education event
that provides members of the com-
munity, particularly youth groups,
an opportunity to tour and/or ride
overnight aboard Navy ships.
