SPECIAL REPORT:
INTELLIGENCE, SURVEILLANCE, RECONNAISSANCE
As technology improves and platforms continue to be put through their
paces in real-world situations, unmanned aerial vehicles are becoming ever
more critical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) assets to
the sea services. The Navy and Marines have used the catapult-launched
ScanEagle for a variety of missions, and the Fire Scout unmanned helicopter will be ready for its first Navy deployment later this year. Farther down
the road, the Broad Area Maritime Surveillance system promises yet another leap ahead in ISR capabilities.
