Short Bursts
■ The Battle Creek-Kalamazoo,
Mich., Council wrapped up the summer by taking part in a pair of picnics
on behalf of the Coast Guard and
Navy Reserve. In August, council
members convened at Coast Guard
Station St. Joseph, Mich., to host a
picnic with the station keepers and
tour the facility. The group also took
a cruise on Lake Michigan aboard a
Coast Guard surf boat. In September,
the council teamed with the Navy
Operational Support Center (NOSC)
First Class Petty Officers Association
and the Battle Creek Chief Petty
Officers Association to host the
annual NLUS Family Day/Navy
Reserve picnic at the NOSC in Battle
Creek. Along with static military displays, family events and food, organizations including the Department of
Veterans Affairs, Fleet Reserve Association and VA Medical Center at
Battle Creek were on site to present
information and answer questions.
■ The Massachusetts Bay Council
has presented its 2008 PACE Award
to Operations Specialist 3rd Class
Nicole E. Davis of the USS
Constitution. The council provides a
stipend to the ship’s Sailors to
encourage participation in the Navy’s
Afloat College Education Program
(PACE) by assisting with expenses
not covered. Council Vice President
Norm Dobson, chairman of the
Awards Committee, and committee
member Robert Gillen, a former
commanding officer aboard
Constitution, presented Davis with the
award for successfully completing
the college courses she took while
serving aboard the ship. The PACE
program provides academic skills
and college courses to students while
they are on sea duty assignments. ■

STATEMENT OF POLICY
■ We of the Navy League of the United
States stand for a strong America — a nation
morally, economically, and internally strong.
■ We believe that the security of our nation
and of the people of the world demands a
well-balanced, integrated, mobile American
defense team, of which a strong Navy, Marine
Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine are
indispensable parts.
■ We support all Armed Services to the end
that each may make its appropriate contribu-
tion to the national security.
■ We know that in a free nation an informed
public is indispensable to national security
and, therefore, we will strive to keep the
nation alert to dangers which threaten — both
from without and within.
■ We favor appropriations for each of the
Armed Services, adequate for national securi-
ty, economically administered.
■ We oppose any usurpation of the
Congress’s constitutional authority over the
Armed Services.
■ We urge that our country maintain world lead-
ership in scientific research and development.
■ We support industrial preparedness, plan-
ning, production.
■ We support efforts of our government to
achieve worldwide peace through international
cooperation.
■ We advocate a foreign policy which will
avoid wars — if possible; if not, win them!
