The Navy League’s Northeast
Florida Region and Naval
Air Station Jacksonville (NAS Jax)
honored about 150 Individual
Augmentees (IAs) from the base
and tenant commands at an IA
Appreciation Program luncheon
April 23 at the NAS Jax Officers’
Guest speaker for the event was
Navy League National President J.
“This first IA recognition is one
of the most important things we
are doing this year,” he told the
gathering. “IAs go over there
alone, then they come home alone
and then go back to their units.
When a battle group goes, there
are big celebrations and the air
groups have their fly-ins, but the
IAs just come home and that’s
not right. The sacrifices … are
McGrath said he hopes this
inaugural ceremony will lead the
way for others across the country.
NAS Jax Commanding Officer
Capt. Jack Scorby Jr. kicked off
the event honoring the Sailors and
“These military men and women
answered a very tough call,” he
said. “They headed into unknown
territory, faced an unknown enemy
and made all of us extremely
proud. We have more than 600 IAs
deployed from the NAS Jax area
alone, and the Navy had more than
12,000 IAs deployed overall.
“Today, it is our turn to stand
behind them and their families and
show our support and appreciation
for a job well done. I salute the
Navy League for sponsoring this
great event,” Scorby said.
Several state and city representatives also thanked the IAs for their
dedication and service, according to
William E. Dudley, Northeast Florida Area President, who helped
coordinate the event with the support of the Daytona Beach, Jacksonville, Mayport, St. Augustine and
Space Coast Councils.
As the IAs gathered for the luncheon, a slide show displayed photos
of them on their IA assignments,
bringing back many memories as
they reminisced about their time in
the war zone, Dudley said.
During the event, the IAs were
presented with special plaques for
their accomplishments while fighting the war on terrorism. Many of
the IAs’ spouses also were recognized during the luncheon for their
support. In all, 149 IAs and 56
spouses were honored, according to
Dudley. Capt. Steve Holmes, executive officer, NAS Jax, was the master
of ceremonies for the event.
